Lohri Message

Lohri is a popular Indian festival widely celebrated in northern India. The origin of this joyous festival dates back to the popular tale of Dulla Bhatti. The tradition of Lohri is followed by singing songs in praise of Dulla Bhatti. Groups of boys and girls gather by the end of the first week of January each year. They sing songs of Dulla Bhatti and visit door to door. People give them money, sweets, popcorn, sesame and jaggery. Turning these groups back empty-handed is considered inauspicious. Lohri message is also sent to near and dear ones on this festival.

The significance of Lohri is marked by the end of winter season. It is celebrated on the last day of Paush (winter). The festival also welcomes the new season Magha (spring on January 13). This is the period when the sun makes changes in its route. The message of Lohri is also often related to the worship of the fire and sun. The tradition is observed by different communities of the nation by different names. Lohri is known to be a Punjabi festival exclusively. People in Punjab and those settled in other cities of the nation and abroad exchange Lohri message with their relatives and friends to express their love.

As already discussed, the origin of this beautiful festival is associated with the central character of Lohri songs, Dulla Bhatti. Dulla Bhatti was a Muslim robber who lived in Punjab centuries ago. This was a period when Emperor Akbar ruled most of the regions in the country. He robbed the rich to help poor people with their basic necessity. He successfully rescued Hindu girls who were forcibly taken to be sold by Muslims. He also arranged for their marriages with Hindu boys. This heroic act of Dulla Bhatti was highly praised by all Punjabis. He became a hero for them. The festival of Lohri is dedicated to his brave and heroic act. Special Lohri message and songs are dedicated to express gratitude towards Dulla Bhatti's act of bravery.

Lohri is celebrated with great pomp and show at homes with newly-weds and birth of a boy child. Huge bonfire is lit and people dance around it to express their happiness. Special Lohri messages are sent across to the newly-weds and parents of boy child.
